Saori Sugeno

Senior Lecturer in Finance, University of Surrey

Dr Saori Sugeno is Senior Lecturer in Finance and Corporate Governance at Surrey Business School, University of Surrey, where she also serves as Faculty Transnational Education Lead and Director of Global Mobility. She is the author of Stakeholder Capitalism and Corporate Governance in Japan. Her research explores corporate governance, financial stability, and stakeholder capitalism in comparative perspective, with a particular focus on Japan and Asian economies. She is an Associate of the Møller Institute at Churchill College, University of Cambridge.

Before joining academia, Dr Sugeno spent sixteen years as Executive Director and Senior Economist at Daiwa Capital Markets Europe and Daiwa Institute of Research in London and Tokyo, where she specialised in emerging markets economics, covering Russia and ASEAN. She has written for Nikkei across multiple platforms, including books published under the Nikkei Premium Series, and has co-organised annual joint conferences with Chatham House and the Daiwa Institute of Research on the geopolitical and geoeconomic challenges facing the UK and Japan. She holds a PhD in Economics from Chuo University, Tokyo.
