Gavin Yamey

Professor of Global Health and Public Policy, Duke University

Gavin Yamey is the Hymowitz Family Professor of Global Health at Duke University’s Global Health Institute, where he launched and directs the Center for Policy Impact in Global Health. He is also a Professor of Public Policy at the Duke Sanford School of Public Policy, a core faculty member of the Duke Margolis Institute for Health Policy, and affiliate faculty of Duke Science and Society. He teaches the Duke Geneva Global Health Fellowship.

He trained in clinical medicine at Oxford University and University College London, medical journalism and editing at the BMJ, and public health at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. He was previously an assistant editor at the BMJ, Deputy Editor of wjm—the Western Journal of Medicine and one of the founding editors of PLoS Medicine. In 2009, he was a Kaiser Family Foundation Fellow in Global Health Reporting. He began his academic career in 2010 at the University of California, San Francisco, where he launched and led the Evidence-to-Policy initiative and was an Associate Professor of Epidemiology and Biostatistics. In 2022, he was the annual visiting Heath Clark Professor at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine.

He has been an External Advisor to the WHO and co-chairs the Partnership for Maternal, Newborn and Child Health’s Finance and Economics Working Group. He is a columnist for TIME magazine, has written widely for popular media, and has published over 250 articles in peer-reviewed journals.
